Vyshyvanka & Ukrainian clothing

What is a vyshyvanka?

A vyshyvanka (Ukrainian: вишиванка) is a traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt or blouse. The word comes from the Ukrainian verb vyshyvaty — to embroider. Vyshyvanky feature hand-stitched or machine-embroidered patterns that vary by region and tradition, and are worn as both everyday clothing and cultural dress on occasions like World Vyshyvanka Day and Easter. What is World Vyshyvanka Day?

World Vyshyvanka Day is celebrated on the third Thursday of May each year — in 2026, that's May 21. It's a global day when people of all backgrounds wear Ukrainian embroidered clothing in solidarity with Ukrainian culture. It started as a student movement in Chernivtsi, Ukraine in 2006 and has since spread worldwide. Learn more about Vyshyvanka Day 2026.

Can non-Ukrainians wear a vyshyvanka?

Yes. Wearing a vyshyvanka — especially on World Vyshyvanka Day — is widely seen as a gesture of cultural appreciation and solidarity, not appropriation. The holiday was created to share Ukrainian culture with the world, and that spirit of openness is core to how it's celebrated globally.

What is the difference between a vyshyvanka and a regular embroidered blouse?

All vyshyvanky are embroidered, but not all embroidered blouses are vyshyvanky. A vyshyvanka specifically features embroidery patterns rooted in Ukrainian regional folk traditions — specific stitches, motifs, and placement that carry cultural meaning. A generic embroidered blouse uses embroidery purely as decoration without that cultural context.

How do I care for a vyshyvanka?

Most vyshyvanky can be machine-washed on a gentle cold cycle. Turn the garment inside out to protect the embroidery. Lay flat or hang to dry avoid tumble drying. Iron on a low setting on the reverse side, or use a pressing cloth over embroidered areas.

Sizing

What sizes do you carry?

Our women's collections generally run XS–3XL, with some styles extending to XXXL. Men's vyshyvanka are available S–5XL for most styles. Children's vyshyvanka are sized in European cm (86–158 cm). Each product page lists the available sizes for that specific item.

How do your sizes run?

Sizing varies by item and supplier. We recommend checking the size chart on each product page. If you're between sizes, size up for embroidered blouses — they're typically designed with a relaxed traditional fit.
