Every year on the third Thursday of May, something quiet and powerful happens across the world. People in Kyiv, Chicago, Toronto, Berlin, and São Paulo put on an embroidered shirt or blouse — a vyshyvanka — and walk out into their day wearing Ukrainian identity on their skin. In 2026, that day is Thursday, May 21. This is what it is, why it matters, and how to be part of it.
What is World Vyshyvanka Day?
World Vyshyvanka Day (Ukrainian: День Вишиванки) is an annual global celebration of the Ukrainian embroidered shirt — the vyshyvanka — as a living symbol of Ukrainian culture, identity, and resilience. It's held on the third Thursday of May each year, and it's observed by millions of people across more than 60 countries.
The simplicity of the holiday is part of what makes it powerful: there are no tickets, no ceremonies you need to attend, no right or wrong way to participate. You wear something embroidered. That's it. The gesture is the message.
How Vyshyvanka Day was born
It started in 2006 in Chernivtsi, in western Ukraine, at a university. A group of students decided to come to class wearing their vyshyvanka — not as a costume, not for a performance, just as a spontaneous act of cultural pride. The idea spread to other universities, then to workplaces, then across the country. Ukrainian diaspora communities in North America and Europe picked it up within a few years. By 2014, it was a global event.
After Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Vyshyvanka Day took on a different weight. For many people outside Ukraine — and for Ukrainians living abroad, including in US cities like Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia — wearing a vyshyvanka on May 21 became an act of solidarity. A way of standing with a culture that is under direct, violent threat. A way of saying: we see you, we are with you, and your culture will not disappear.
We built Omriyana in that spirit. This holiday is personal to us.
When is Vyshyvanka Day 2026?
Thursday, May 21, 2026. The third Thursday of May, every year. Mark it now. If you're ordering a vyshyvanka to wear, order before May 14 — standard US shipping takes 5–10 business days and we want you to have it in time.
How people celebrate across the United States
In cities with large Ukrainian communities — Chicago's Ukrainian Village, Brighton Beach in Brooklyn, Philadelphia's Ukrainian neighborhood, Detroit, Los Angeles — cultural centers, churches, and community organizations typically organize Vyshyvanka Day gatherings. The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago, the Ukrainian Museum in New York, and similar institutions often hold events.
But Vyshyvanka Day doesn't require an event. Most people simply wear their vyshyvanka — to work, to school, on the commute — and post it with #VyshyvankaDay or #ДеньВишиванки. The hashtag becomes its own global gathering.
